One Front Door at a Time – Song Description
“Funny how we’re all the same, when something breaks, and someone calls.” The moment that gives this whole song its real weight is easy to miss on a first listen — a tradesman, reflecting quietly on a long career, learning almost in passing that a former customer of his has died since his last visit to that particular house. Nothing dramatic surrounds the discovery. It just arrives, folded into an ordinary reflection, the way news like that often does in real life. I think the whole song turns on how much of our lives we spend briefly inside other people’s houses, fixing something broken, exchanging a few words about the weather, without ever really coming to know the person behind the door — and how strange and sudden it feels when that gap between stranger and acquaintance suddenly, permanently closes. It’s one of the gentlest songs I’ve ever written, and honestly one of the ones I’m fondest of in the whole collection, precisely because so little happens in it, and what does happen matters more for that reason.
I never set out chasing fortune,
Never planned some grand design.
I simply took the work that found me,
One front door at a time.
A ringing phone… another journey…
Another town beneath the rain.
Never knowing, as I drove there,
How that night would leave its name.
Chorus
One front door at a time,
One more stranger, one more friend.
Thank you for the road you gave me…
I’d walk it all again.
One front door at a time.
Verse 2
Some homes echoed with young children,
Some were silent as the grave.
Some would always put the kettle on,
Before they’d ask my name.
Some had portraits on the mantel,
Some had nothing much at all.
Funny how we’re all the same…
When something breaks… and someone calls.
Chorus
One front door at a time,
One more stranger, one more friend.
Thank you for the road you gave me…
I’d walk it all again.
One front door at a time.
Verse 3
I met a man worth fifty million,
I met one with his final pound.
Funny how a leaking water pipe
Leaves us standing on the same ground.
Years slipped by without me noticing,
Faces slowly drift away.
Then one day somebody answered,
“I’m sorry… she passed away.”
Verse 4
Every doorway held a story,
Every face a different name.
Some I’d never see again,
Yet I’d remember them the same.
Looking back, they built a lifetime,
One small kindness every day.
Funny how complete strangers
Helped to shape me on my way.
Chorus
One front door at a time,
One more stranger, one more friend.
Thank you for the road you gave me…
I’d walk it all again.
One front door at a time.
Final Verse
These days I drive a little slower,
Take more time to see the sky.
Some old roads have changed their names now,
Some old friends have said goodbye.
There’ll come a day I can’t be there,
Someone else will take my place.
Another van outside the window…
A younger man I used to be.
Final Chorus
One front door at a time,
One more stranger, one more friend.
Thank you for the road you gave me…
I’d walk it all again.
One front door at a time.
