Wonder – Song Description
“One miracle. Right here. Right now.” The things this song chooses to marvel at are almost aggressively ordinary — morning light coming through a window, children playing somewhere nearby, a weathered pair of hands folded quietly in someone’s lap. I don’t think that plainness is a soft, humble edge placed around a bigger argument. I think it is the argument. If wonder needs something genuinely rare or spectacular to justify itself, then what we’re calling wonder was probably never that in the first place — it was just surprise, which fades the moment the unusual thing becomes familiar. Real wonder, the kind this song is reaching for, has to be able to survive familiarity, has to keep finding the ordinary hands and the ordinary window worth being amazed by on the thousandth morning as much as the first. I wrote two separate versions of this one, because I needed to hear it a second time before I fully believed I’d actually said what I meant, rather than something that only sounded like it.
